Morocco weather by the numbers

Four climates under one flag: the plateau cities, the two coasts, the mountains and the desert, by the numbers.

Paper-cut collage of a Moroccan weather year: a rainy Rif slope, a sunny Marrakech terrace, snowy Atlas peaks and a hot desert sky in layered panels.

The short answer

Morocco has one flag and four climates under it. Ifrane, in the Middle Atlas, takes about 960 millimetres of rain a year; Ouarzazate, on a bare plateau below the High Atlas, about 115. Marrakech averages daily highs near 38 degrees in July, while Agadir on the coast stays around 27 all summer. The High Atlas holds snow above about 3,000 metres in winter.

  • Ifrane, in the Middle Atlas, takes about 960 millimetres of rain a year; Fes takes about 490.
  • Ouarzazate, below the High Atlas, is a bare plateau with desert weather behind it.
  • The Atlantic coast sits under sea fog in summer; Marrakech can pass 38 degrees in July.
  • The Sahara passes 45 degrees in the same week the coast is grey.

What to pack

  • Layers

Days and nights differ far more than seasons do, especially on the plateau and in the desert.

  • Sun

The winter sun is strong at altitude; a hat and water matter on any mountain day.

  • Rain

Winter rains arrive and leave quickly; a light shell covers the coast and the north.

Morocco publishes one national forecast, and it is wrong in four places at once. The country is a Mediterranean coast, an Atlantic coast, a plateau in the middle with Fes and Marrakech on it, and a mountain range with a desert behind it. The numbers make the point better than any map.

The inland plateau

Fes and Marrakech sit on the plateau. Fes takes about 490 millimetres of rain a year, mostly between November and March, and can drop to freezing on winter nights. Marrakech is drier, about 221 millimetres, and hotter: daily highs average close to 38 degrees in July. Spring and autumn are the comfortable windows in both cities.

The two coasts

  • The Atlantic coast: Agadir’s highs run from about 21 degrees in January to 27 in August, a range so small that the city sells winter sun. Essaouira is windier and a touch cooler, which is why kite surfers live there.
  • The Mediterranean: Tangier and the Rif coast are milder than the plateau in winter and cooler in summer, with the Rif catching the rain that never reaches the south.

The mountains and the desert

Ifrane, at about 1,660 metres in the Middle Atlas, takes near 960 millimetres of rain a year and holds real snow in winter. Ouarzazate, below the High Atlas, takes about 115 millimetres and runs hot and dry most of the year. South of the mountains the desert towns are warm by day and cold at night in winter, and scorching through midsummer.

What to pack

Layers, always, and a jacket for the evenings even in summer: desert nights and mountain towns drop fast. In winter add a warm layer for the Atlas and the desert, and expect rain in the north. In summer the coast needs a light sweater and the inland cities need a hat.

What it means for your phone

Weather apps and maps are exactly the data you use most on a trip like this, and the desert is where you notice: download offline maps for any desert or mountain route before you leave the towns, and the eSIM fills in live data wherever there is signal.

The bottom line

Paper-cut collage: a hand holds a phone showing a QR code beside a small globe with Africa facing out, a SIM card, a straw hat and orange blossoms.

Questions

What is the hottest city in summer?

Marrakech. Daily highs average close to 38 degrees in July and August, and the city's life moves to early mornings, evenings and shaded courtyards. If you go then, plan on being indoors at two in the afternoon.

Why is Agadir milder than Marrakech?

The Canary Current. The cold ocean water off Agadir cools the air and keeps the annual temperature range tiny: daily highs stay around 21 in January and 27 in high summer, which is why the coast is a winter destination.

When does it snow in Morocco?

Winter, and only high up: the High Atlas keeps snow above about 3,000 metres from November into spring, and the Middle Atlas around Ifrane sees proper winter. The peaks carry snow while Marrakech is sunny below them, which makes the Atlas a day trip from the city.

What is the chergui?

A hot, dry wind from the Sahara that reaches the Atlantic coast, mostly in spring and autumn. It can push Agadir's temperature up for a day or two, and it fills the air with dust. Locals treat it as weather to wait out.
