Marrakech

  • The red city
  • Atlas day trips
  • Strong 4G across the city
Paper-cut collage of Marrakech: the Koutoubia minaret above the medina rooftops with the Atlas Mountains behind, a market stall and a phone on a café table.

The short answer

Marrakech is a city of dense alleys inside a wall, and your phone is the tool that makes it navigable: maps, riad pins, ride-hailing and translation. An eSIM switched on at Marrakech Menara has the phone online in minutes, as a Moroccan line on a local plan.

Where the signal holds

  • 4G

    Across the city

All three networks cover Marrakech, the airport road and the new city.

  • 5G

    5G in the main cities

Morocco's 5G rollout began in the main cities on 7 November 2025.

  • Medina

    Inside the walls

GPS works but the alleys defeat it: ask the riad for a pin and a landmark, and screenshot both.

Practical notes

  1. Getting thereRAK, fifteen minutes from the city; the airport train does not exist here, taxis do.
  2. Getting aroundOn foot inside the medina, taxis outside it. Ask fares before wheels move.
  3. PayingCash for the souks and tips, cards for restaurants and riads. Dirhams cannot leave the country, so spend the last ones.
  4. When to goOctober to April; if summer is the only window, mornings and evenings carry the days.

Marrakech is the red city: ochre walls, a snow-capped mountain range on the horizon, and a medina that has been trading for nine centuries. It is also a city that runs on phones: riad pins, ride-hailing, restaurant bookings, the call to the guide who is meeting you at the square.

Getting there and around

Arrive at Marrakech Menara (RAK), about fifteen minutes from the medina. Inside the walls, everything is a walk or a short taxi; agree the fare first. For the newer city and the gardens, taxis and ride-hailing apps both work.

What to see

  • Jemaa el-Fna: the square that changes shift by hour: storytellers and food stalls in the evening, juice carts and shade in the day.
  • The souks and the Koutoubia: the mosque’s minaret is the city’s landmark; the souks around it are the maze everyone warns you about.
  • The Majorelle garden and the Bahia palace: the two set-piece visits, best at opening or late afternoon.
  • The Atlas: Imlil and the Toubkal valleys are under two hours away for a day trip with a guide.

Practical notes

  1. Getting there: RAK, fifteen minutes from the city; the airport train does not exist here, taxis do.

Questions

How many days does Marrakech need?

Three days covers the medina, the gardens and a day trip; five lets you add the Atlas or Essaouira without rushing. The city rewards early mornings and slow evenings.

Will my map work in the medina?

GPS works, but the alleys defeat it. Ask your riad for a pin plus a landmark, screenshot it, and treat the first walk as part of the trip. Maps get better once you learn the main souk streets.

What is the weather like?

Hot and dry from June to September, with July highs near 38 degrees; mild and comfortable from October to April, with genuinely cold nights in December and January. Layers beat optimism here.

Should I rent a car?

Not for the city. For the Atlas and the desert routes, a car is one option and a driver is the easier one: mountain passes and long desert stretches are better left to someone who knows them.
