The short answer

Rabat is Morocco's capital and its calmest big city: the Hassan Tower and the mausoleum, the Udayas kasbah over the river mouth, the Chellah ruins, all walkable and all on the rail line. An eSIM gets you online for the train, the tram and the day's maps, as a Moroccan line on a local plan.

  3. PayingCards work widely in the capital; keep cash for the medina and tips.
  4. When to goSpring and autumn; the Atlantic keeps summers mild and winters damp rather than cold.

Rabat is the capital that behaves like a capital: wide boulevards, a working government quarter, and one of the most beautiful river mouths in the country, all without the crush of the bigger tourist cities. It rewards a day, and it is the natural stop on the rail line between Casablanca and Fes.

Getting there and around

Trains from Casablanca run frequently and take about an hour; Fes and Tangier are further along the same line. From the station, the tram and taxis cover the sights, and the historic core is walkable once you are in it.

What to see

  • The Hassan Tower and the Mohammed V mausoleum: the unfinished mosque’s columns and the king’s tomb, side by side and free to walk.
  • The Udayas kasbah: the blue-and-white quarter over the river mouth, with the finest view in the city.
  • The Chellah: the Roman-then-Merenid necropolis beyond the walls, gardens and storks included.
  • The medina: small, quiet, and good for a last hour of shopping without a hard sell.

Questions

Is Rabat worth a day?

Yes, and it is an easy one: the Hassan Tower, the mausoleum and the Udayas kasbah sit within a walk of each other, and the Chellah and the medina fill the rest. It is also the least pressured big city in Morocco, which is part of the appeal after Marrakech or Fes.

How do I get there?

By train: Rabat sits on the main line with frequent trains from Casablanca, and onward services to Fes and Tangier. The station is central, and the tram reaches the landmarks from it.

What is the tram like?

Two clean, cheap lines through the city with machines that take cards; useful between the station, the centre and the coast. It is the easiest public transport in the country.
