Data roaming in Morocco, explained

The short answer
On a local plan, no roaming switch is needed: the phone connects as a Moroccan line on Orange Maroc. On a regional plan, turn data roaming on for the eSIM line, because it connects through a partner network in each country. Keep roaming off on your home line either way; that is where charges could come from.

One setting decides how smooth the first hour in Morocco goes, and which setting it is depends on the plan you bought.
Local plan or regional plan
- Local plan: a line on Orange Maroc, one of Morocco’s three networks. The phone connects as a Moroccan line, no roaming switch needed. This is the plan to buy if the trip stays in Morocco.
- Regional plan: covers other African countries through a partner network in each. In Morocco it connects too, but through a partner, so data roaming must be on for the eSIM line.
The two rules for every trip
- eSIM line: mobile data set to this line. Roaming on only for a regional plan.
- Home line: data roaming off, data left to the eSIM.
How to check the settings
- iPhone: Settings, Mobile Service, tap the travel line, Data Roaming.
- Android: Settings, Network and internet, SIMs, tap the travel line, Data roaming.
If the phone warns about roaming
The warning appears because you are on a foreign network. On a regional plan’s eSIM line it is expected and safe: the plan is prepaid. On the home line, heed the warning: keep roaming off.
Questions
Is data roaming the same as roaming charges?
No. Roaming charges come from your home carrier's rates. The eSIM plans are prepaid, so once paid for, the connection cannot add a bill on the eSIM line. Your home SIM is the line to keep off.
What network name will I see?
On a local plan, Orange Maroc, the Moroccan network the plan runs on. On a regional plan, the partner network's name in each country, which is why that plan needs roaming on.
Do I need roaming on at home, before I fly?
No. Install the eSIM at home, but keep the line switched off until you land. Switch it on in your first minutes in the country, with roaming on only if your plan is regional.
Why does my home line show a roaming warning?
Because you are abroad. Keep data roaming off on the home line so it cannot use data at your carrier's rates; calls and texts follow your carrier's own abroad rules.
