The short answer

Citizens of the European Union, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Russia, China and the Gulf states, among others, may enter Morocco without a visa for ninety days of tourism. Holders of certain other passports can apply for an e-Visa on the official portal, and everyone else needs a visa from a Moroccan consulate. To stay longer than ninety days, ask for an extension at a Moroccan police station.

  • Visa-free: 90 days of tourism for the EU, the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, Brazil and many more.
  • e-Visa: an online application on the official portal for the ten listed nationalities, since 10 July 2022.
  • Everyone else: a visa from a Moroccan consulate, arranged weeks before the flight.
  • At the border: a passport valid for three months from entry, and the address of your first night.

Good to know

  • The 90 days

Counted from the day you enter; the officer's stamp is the record, so keep it readable.

  • Staying longer

Ask for an extension at a Moroccan police station before the 90 days run out, not at a consulate.

  • Other visas

A valid Schengen, British, American or Japanese visa can qualify some nationalities for a conditional e-Visa; the official portal lists the current rule.

Morocco divides the world into three groups, and which one you are in decides how much of your planning is paperwork. The largest group walks in without a visa and stays for ninety days. A second group applies for an e-Visa on a website. Everyone else goes to a consulate.

The ninety days

Most visitors from Europe, North America, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea and the Gulf, among others, enter visa-free for ninety days of tourism. There is nothing to apply for: the officer stamps your passport at the border and the clock starts. Keep the passport valid well beyond the trip (three months from entry is the British advice) and carry the address of your first night.

The e-Visa

Since 10 July 2022 Morocco runs an official e-Visa for a list of nationalities that previously needed a consulate: India, Israel, Jordan, Thailand, Vietnam and others. The application is on the official portal only. Holders of a valid Schengen, British, American, Canadian, Australian, Irish, Japanese, New Zealand or Emirati visa or residence permit can apply for a conditional e-Visa under the same system.

Everyone else

A visa from a Moroccan consulate, arranged before booking flights. Consulate appointments set the timeline, so start weeks ahead rather than days.

Staying longer

Extensions are granted at Moroccan police stations, not consulates, and are easier when you are staying in one city. Ask before the ninety days expire.

For the phone

Whatever your visa situation, the phone side is simpler: an eSIM bought online before the flight needs no counter, no passport copy and no registration, which is the same reason the airport counters can be walked past on arrival. The comparison is on eSIM or SIM card.

Questions

How long can I stay without a visa?

Ninety days of tourism for most Western passports and a long list of others, counted from the day you enter. The officer stamps your passport at the border; that stamp is the record, so keep it readable.

What do I need at the border?

A passport valid for at least three months from entry (the British advice), and often a landing form with your address in Morocco. Officials may ask where you are staying, so have the riad or hotel name ready offline.

Who can use the e-Visa?

Citizens of the countries Morocco lists on its official e-Visa portal, including India, Israel, Jordan, Thailand and Vietnam, can apply online since 10 July 2022. The portal is the only official application site; anything else charging a fee is a copy.

Can I stay longer than ninety days?

Yes, by asking for an extension at a police station before the ninety days run out. The Moroccan police handle extensions, not the consulates, and the request is easier in a city where you are staying put.

I hold a Schengen visa. Does that help in Morocco?

For some nationalities, yes: a valid Schengen, British, American, Canadian, Australian, Irish, Japanese, New Zealand or Emirati visa or residence permit qualifies the holder for a conditional e-Visa. Check the official portal for the current list before relying on it.
